Ukraine gets first M1A1 Abrams tanks from Australia

The Albanese government has confirmed the transfer of the first tranche of Australian-supplied M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine’s Armed Forces, marking a major milestone in Canberra’s support for Kyiv as it continues to resist Russia’s invasion.

According to a statement released Friday, Ukraine has already taken possession of the majority of the 49 Abrams tanks pledged by Australia, with the remaining vehicles set to arrive in the coming months. The delivery is part of a broader $1.5 billion assistance package Australia has committed to Ukraine since the start of the war.

“The M1A1 Abrams tanks will make a significant contribution to Ukraine’s ongoing fight against Russia’s illegal and immoral invasion,” said Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles. “Australia remains steadfast in our support for Ukraine and seeing a just and lasting peace.”

The tanks, which have been modified for Ukrainian requirements, are expected to enhance the mobility and firepower of Kyiv’s armored brigades, complementing equipment provided by other international partners.

Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy underscored the importance of the transfer, stating: “Australia stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine. These modified M1A1 Abrams tanks will deliver more firepower and more mobility to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. They meet a direct request from the Ukrainian Government and form part of Australia’s unwavering commitment to protect the global rules-based order.”

In addition to the armored vehicles, Australia is preparing to deploy a Royal Australian Air Force E-7A Wedgetail aircraft to Europe in August to support protection of key international corridors used to channel aid into Ukraine.

The Australian Defence Force also remains engaged in training Ukrainian troops under Operation Kudu, as part of multinational efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s battlefield capabilities.

Marles praised the Australian Army personnel involved in facilitating the delivery. “I was pleased to meet the Australian Army personnel who helped facilitate the delivery of these tanks from Australia to Ukraine,” he said.

The Australian government emphasized that this contribution reinforces its commitment to defending democratic values and ensuring stability in Europe amid a conflict that has now entered its third year.
