Save the job description somewhere and review it before your interview, you do not want to go in and ask what the job duties are.
Please, please, please, do not show up to your interview smelling of cigarettes or weed smoke! If you are a smoker, you may be nose blind to it, but other people are not. Don’t smoke in your interview clothes, try not to smoke day of, even if you do it outside, the smell can get into your hair and clothes. And if you smoke in your car, stop now and air it out/Febreze it. Smells transfer.
Also, don’t vape during your interview. This shouldn’t have to be said, but apparently it does.
Just because your shoes are black, does not mean they are appropriate interview shoes. Dress shoes only.
It doesn’t matter how casual the workplace is, do not show up to your interview in shirts with offensive slogans, swear words, or political slogans.
If you don’t have interview clothes, Goodwill is a relatively cheap place to start. Many cities also have community closets where you can get discounts or free clothes if you come in with an interview invitation or job offer.
Be early, at least 5 minutes, even on a Zoom call. If you are more than 10 minutes early for an in-person interview, wait a few minutes before going in. Don’t smoke!
If your interview is a video call, open the app in advance so that if it needs to update, you aren’t late for your interview.
If you have facial hair, you don’t need to shave completely, but make sure your beard/mustache/whatever is washed and groomed (trimmed, etc.)
Shower and wear deodorant to your interview.
In line with one of today’s letters, do not wear colorful pimple patches to your interview. It’s one thing after you already have the job, but not at the interview. Also, avoid glitter.
If you have an iPhone and know you have a phone interview or have set up a call with a recruiter, turn off the setting that sends all calls from numbers you haven’t saved to voicemail.
This one is a bit controversial, and YMMV. We have heard from employers that when they call, whether for an interview, or to set one up/have a quick chat, if you have the iPhone call screening on, where the person has to say their name and reason for calling, they will just hang up. It’s probably not fair, especially with the increase in Spam calls, but, unfortunately, this does seem to be a deal breaker for many.
