New Giner de Los Ríos

It was almost four years ago that Nerja demolished the old school building Giner de los Ríos which had been converted into a social and cultural centre. Since then it has been a parking area.

Now, however, the Town Council is after EU funding to build there, which would costs over 10m euros; that’s double what they had calculated four years ago, owing to an increase in material costs.

So, the conservative Mayor, who dodged yet another judicial reckoning over the illegal dump in Maro, will approach with his cap out the EU for funding via the FEDER Programme through its Planes de Actuación Integrados (PAI).

So what will this new building be used for? Well, a new Centro Cultural y Social Giner de los Ríos. The funds would also cover doing up part of the town-centre street, Calle Manuel Marín and improvement to the refuse collection system (Residuos Sólidos Urbanos).

Actually, the total budget for all this is 15m euros so the town coffers will have to squeeze out some reluctant sheckles as well.

Mayor Armijo (PP), who enjoys an absolute majority (which is arguably an absoute mystery) explained, “This initiative that will unfold with EU resources is key to the modernisation of Nerja town centre,” adding, “Our objective is to improve the surroundings for locals, whilst at the same time promoting cultural, economic and environmental development in the area.

Editorial comment: “hands up anybody who considers that the Mayor risked getting struck down by celestial retribution for claiming that he is “promoting environmental development” considering his part in the natural-park-dumping scandal.
