How Networking Can Unlock Job Opportunities (especially when your Job Search feels stuck)

This is the first in a 3-part series on what to do when your job search feels stuck.

Recently, I was coaching two different job seekers—and both were feeling desperate. They had applied to multiple opportunities, landed some interviews, and yet… nothing was converting into an offer. No traction. No momentum.  If you’ve been there, you know how frustrating that can feel. While continuing to apply is one option, I shared a different strategy—one that often works faster and more effectively than submitting more applications.

Here’s what made the difference:

Reconnect with Old Friends—and Make New Ones

Most people underestimate just how powerful their network really is.

Statistics consistently show that the majority of jobs are landed through referrals—not job boards. That means you might want to spend just as much (if not more) time working your network as you do applying online. This doesn’t have to feel forced or transactional. In fact, it works best when it’s not.

* Talk with people in your neighborhood
* Attend events in your community
* Engage at your place of worship or local groups
* Volunteer for a nonprofit you care about

The key is to **branch out**.

Even if someone isn’t in your field, don’t discount the connection. Some of the most valuable opportunities come from *friends of friends*. One of my clients recently landed a new job after casually reconnecting with her neighbor while doing yard work. Her neighbor wasn’t in her industry—but had a close friend who was. That conversation led to informational discussions, then a formal interview, and ultimately… a job offer.

That’s how this really works.

The Bottom Line

If your job search isn’t gaining traction, the answer usually isn’t *more applications*.

It’s a different approach.

Focus on building real connections.
Focus on genuine conversations.
Focus on expanding your reach beyond job boards.

Because often, the opportunity you’re looking for isn’t posted—it’s shared.
