I was looking at newer BMW’s motorcycles since I have owned several BMW cars and appreciate the engineering. I am somewhat mechanically inclined. The silver E39 in the back is a 6-speed manual V8 that I did the conversion on.

I kept being told that the bikes I was looking at were all too heavy and too powerful for a new rider. As I worked my way down the power and weight scale I came to the Airheads. This 1978 R100/7 popped up in my area for a modest sum so I went and looked it over and made a deal.
The bike had not been started in two years, was on a trickle charger, it fired up almost immediately. It ran a bit rough for a few moments and smoothed out. I got it home and pulled the plugs and inspected the cylinders with my bore camera. The left cylinder appears a bit wet, the right perfectly dry. The rather old Autolite plugs matched their respective cylinders for condition.

There appears to be a very uniform crosshatch on both cylinders with no visible vertical scars in either bore. I’m guessing, hoping, that the left cylinder is a bit oily since the bike leans that way on the kickstand. No matter, it seems to be running properly. I’ll do a compression check in the next few days and no matter the result likely just run some Valvoline Restore and Protect and let it work it’s magic. I’ve used it in several BMW cars and that stuff actually works as advertised.I’m going to try and leave most of what you see alone for the moment, but eventually I’d like to get the bike back to a more stock appearance. I already removed the rear luggage tray thing the last, 2nd owner, installed. I have the original hard side bags/boxes and they seem to be in good shape.
Not thrilled with the aftermarket fairing, but I’ll live with it until I can source the original parts to put it back to stock.
I have a motorcycle riding class scheduled for next month. I’ll use the time between to change all the fluids, filters, plugs, balance the carbs and put on fresh tubes & tires.
Sort of cool to have the original owners manual. I’m in Sandpoint Idaho, not far from Spokane. Interesting that it is a 1978 bike that was first registered in June of 1979.
Anyway, my motorcycle journey begins now.
