This is part of 3-part series on how to get unstuck in your job search. If you missed it, start with how networking can unlock opportunities.
If your job search feels stuck, your first instinct might be to apply to more jobs. More applications = more chances… right?
Not necessarily.
In fact, one of the biggest mistakes I see job seekers make is relying too heavily on online applications—without realizing how the process actually works behind the scenes.
The “Volume Trap”
It’s easy to fall into the mindset that if you just apply to enough roles, something will eventually stick.
But here’s the reality:
* You’re competing with hundreds (sometimes thousands) of applicants
* Many resumes never make it past applicant tracking systems (ATS)
* Hiring decisions are often influenced before a role is even publicly posted
So while applying is part of the process, it’s rarely the strategy that creates momentum.
What Actually Works
Instead of focusing only on volume, shift your approach toward **visibility and connection**.
This is where the job search becomes more strategic—and more effective.
* Build relationships with people inside your target companies
* Have conversations that lead to insights and introductions
* Position yourself before opportunities are widely advertised
This is what’s often referred to as the **hidden job market**—and it’s where many of the best opportunities live.
A More Effective Approach
In my work with clients, I guide them through a proven process that goes beyond applying:
* **Soul Search** → Get clear on what you truly want
* **Research** → Connect, explore, and position yourself in the market
* **Job Search** → Execute with focus and strategy
When these three phases work together, the job search becomes much more targeted—and much more successful.
The Bottom Line
If applying to more jobs hasn’t been working, the answer isn’t always to do more.
It’s to do things differently.
Because the goal isn’t just to get *a* job—
it’s to land the *right* one.
