What Will Happen to Sydney Sweeney’s $150,000 Engagement Ring?

After six years together, Sydney Sweeney and Jonathan Davino have called off their wedding. The couple, who began dating in 2018, got engaged in 2022. While details of the proposal were never made public, a source revealed to E! News that it was “very intimate” and the actress “had no idea it was coming.” Over the years, the duo has tried to keep their relationship out of the public eye. And while they’ve been spotted and photographed on a handful of dates, the actress often opted not to wear her engagement ring on such occasions. The sparkler is a four-carat round diamond that’s estimated to be worth $150,000, according to Maxwell Stone, the creative director of Steven Stone, a U.K.-based fine jewelry company.

Yet even though they canceled their upcoming nuptials, it appears that the two are trying to stay together. “Sydney and Jonathan have been having major issues but are not fully split,” a source told Us Weekly. “Things are not great right now, but they aren’t throwing in the towel yet. They are working on their relationship but have called off the wedding for now.” However, it’s likely that even as the duo continues to sort through their differences, Sweeney won’t be wearing the four-carat ring, raising the question of what will happen to the diamond. Typically, when a couple calls off an engagement, if they end on good terms, the receiver of the sparkler will automatically return it to the person who purchased it. But if the split isn’t amicable, who gets to keep the ring will often depend on the state the couple lives in. In California, where Davino and Sweeney appear to spend the majority of their time—and where the actress owns two properties, an engagement ring is considered a conditional gift under the law. As a result, the Euphoria star would be expected to return the jewel to Davino.

Little is known about the couple’s former plans for their nuptials. When asked by Entertainment Tonight in December 2023 about her wedding, Sweeney indicated that she was focusing on her career instead. “I am so busy working,” she said. “I’m a workaholic and I love it, I love it.” In February of this year, TMZ reported that the duo had initially planned to tie the knot in May before putting the celebration “on hiatus” due to their busy schedules.

While Sweeney and Davino rarely publicly comment on their relationship, the actress has made it clear what she wants in a romantic partner. “I don’t date people in the spotlight,” she told Cosmopolitan in 2022. “I don’t date actors or musicians or anyone in entertainment because I can just be normal Syd that way and it’s easiest.” In the interview, she added that she seeks out someone who can be her best friend. “I need to be able to be with someone who I can literally hang out with 24/7 and never get sick of and we laugh every single day.” In 2023, the pair was plagued by breakup rumors after fans took note of Sweeney’s romantic chemistry with her Anyone But You costar, Glen Powell. Sweeney took the opportunity in a Glamour UK piece to set the record straight. “I’ve been in a steady relationship for a really long time, which is not normal in this industry and not normal for my age,” she said. “What I’ve noticed about the idea of celebrity is people really love to build someone up, and then tear them down.”
