Read Jimmy Carter’s 75-Year-Old Love Letter to Rosalynn

While former president Jimmy Carter certainly left his mark on America as the 39th president of the United States, one of his biggest legacies transcends the work of his presidential administration: his 77-year marriage to Rosalynn Carter. With the longest marriage of any presidential couple in all American history, Jimmy and Rosalynn had an exemplary relationship that inspired and continues to inspire couples of all ages and at all stages. On December 29, 2024, nearly one year after his beloved wife passed away, the political leader died at 100 years old. To honor his life and cherish his memory, a state funeral was held on January 9, 2025, at the Washington National Cathedral.

On the day of his funeral, President Joe Biden—who delivered the eulogy—and First Lady Jill Biden posted a tribute to the late president and the beautiful relationship he had with his longtime wife. “Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter had a love story for the ages,” the Bidens wrote as their Instagram caption. “We miss them both dearly, but take comfort knowing they are reunited once again. To the entire Carter family, thank you for sharing them with America and the world.”

Along with their heartfelt words, the current president and his wife posted a black-and-white video of staff workers assembling a memorial table at the White House with mementos from their relationship, including framed photos of the duo and a love letter that Jimmy wrote to Rosalynn 75 years ago—just two years after they tied the knot. As the voiceover of the clip, the longterm couple’s daughter, Amy, read the earnest letter her father wrote, as she shed tears. “My mom spent most of her life in love with my dad,” Amy says as an introduction. “This is from a letter he wrote 75 years ago.”

Amy goes on to read the love note, word for word. “My darling, every time I have ever been away from you, I have been thrilled when I returned to discover just how wonderful you are. While I’m away, I try to convince myself that you really are not, could not be, as sweet and beautiful as I remember. But when I see you, I fall in love with you all over again.”

The public was evidently moved by the touching love letter. “If there was ever a better love story, I’ve yet to see it,” an Instagram user commented. “May President Carter and FLOTUS Carter both RIP.” Others agreed, with one writing, “That is a love that is better than a Hallmark movie,” and another saying, “They had what we all wish for…a true soul mate. 💙.” Many took the moment to reflect on Jimmy’s life and legacy. “How beautiful to have a President as loving, eloquent, and selfless,” one person expressed. Another echoed that statement with, “What an extraordinary man and his love for his wife, country and humanity.”

Five years his death, in an interview with People, Jimmy attributed his health and longevity to Rosalynn—whom he met when she was a newborn and he was three years old. “I think the best explanation for that is to marry the best spouse: someone who will take care of you and engage and do things to challenge you and keep you alive and interested in life,” he stated.
