Here are the top lessons we learned from Lauryn and Michael’s conversation with Dean.

The Power Of Mindset To Build Inner Strength, Confidence and Overcome Obstacles

Giving Is the Foundation for Sustainable Success

Dean says: “The most successful people I know serve at the highest level and don’t keep score.” He explains that when your business model is built around genuinely helping others, success naturally follows. Focusing solely on profits creates burnout and dissatisfaction. Instead, practice a mindset where fulfillment comes from contribution. This giving approach benefits others and provides lasting personal satisfaction.

Be Careful What You Consume: Protect Your Mind

Lauryn always talks about this too. You are what you consume. Dean compares the mind to a ship, saying, “You are the captain of your ship. If you let negative news and fear in, you’re handing the wheel over to chaos.” Take control of your media diet, warning that constant exposure to fear-based content leads to despair and a sense of helplessness. Intentionally choose positive, empowering content to maintain clarity, hope, and the drive to contribute meaningfully to the world.

Overcome a Fixed Mindset Through Uncomfortable Action

To break out of stagnation, Dean lays out a powerful three-step strategy:
“Identify a growing field of interest.”
“Learn from someone crushing it in that space.”
“Take massive, uncomfortable action.”
He stresses that staying in a job or routine that leaves you unfulfilled leads to regret. By pushing through discomfort and proactively learning through real-world experiences, people can unlock innovation and personal transformation.

Resourcefulness Is More Valuable Than Money or Formal Education

Dean declares, “You don’t need money to make money — you need to be resourceful.” He explains that practical skills and the ability to adapt are far more crucial than wealth or a college degree. Sharing examples of how he and his team hire based on capability rather than credentials (same for Michael and Dear Media), Dean illustrates how hands-on learning and creative problem-solving drive real success, especially in today’s economy. He teaches his children the same, encouraging them to “earn it, learn it, and create their own path.”

Hardship Can Be Fuel

Reflecting on his own struggles, Dean shares, “I forgave my dad not for him, but for me — I turned that pain into fuel.” He believes that every setback, no matter how painful, holds a lesson. Rather than being defined by hardship, individuals can reframe it as a source of strength. This resilience, he says, is what truly propels personal growth and entrepreneurial success, not privilege or a perfect background.
